Newark, Nottinghamshire

Mineral deposits close to Newark incorporate some of the highest quality gypsum on earth, and we have been privileged to support British Gypsum Saint Gobain over many years. The clay lands in this area of Nottinghamshire were densely settled in the Iron Age and Roman periods, and sites of this date feature heavily in areas that are mined for gypsum. Preserving archaeology in the ground is not viable, hence we have developed a methodology that works for the industry, and for archaeology: geophysical surveys identify areas of settlement, and these areas are stripped and recorded in advance of of mining operations.
